With support from the Town of Chapel Hill’s Arts & Culture Award Program, we brought Jeghetto to Phillips Middle School to perform his production of 5P1N0K10 for the entire student body.
5P1N0K10 is a puppet theatre Hip Hopera about a robot-boy who wants to become human. Using music, video, and magical marionettes, the show spins the story to which its title and Jeghetto’s moniker refer into an Afrofuturist parable about a robot that longs to be a real B-boy. In the distant future, when robots are used for war, engineer Jeghetto built 5P1N0K10 – an android who fights for humanity and justice. This Afrofuturistic re-imagining of Carlo Collodi’s classic ‘Pinocchio’ includes hand crafted puppets, live music, and projections and is appropriate for ages 10+.
Tarish Pipkins, aka Jeghetto, is a self-taught artist and master of puppetry. He has been building and performing with puppets for over 20 years. He travels nationally, performing in theaters and festivals. He facilitates puppetry workshops and residencies locally and around the country. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Jim Henson Foundation. Tarish regards puppetry as a fine art – a three-dimensional art that you can tell a story with. He states that it is poetry, storytelling, sculpting and sketching and that art is the most effective form of activism. His work also incorporates Hip Hop, and other music, as well as videography. https://jeghetto.com/en-usd/
Prism’s effort to bring Jeghetto’s 5P1N0K10 to all four CHCCS Middle Schools is supported by funds from the Town of Chapel Hill’s Arts & Culture Award Program.
