Legos & Imaginary Architecture at Phillips & Smith Middle Schools

At Phillips and Smith Middle Schools, we had fun engaging with 6th-8th grade students in their CTE classes with an exploration of architecture.

The journey began with a discussion about how architecture shapes our built environment. Together, we marveled at architectural wonders from around the globe and unpacked the creative process behind an architect’s work. Then it was the students’ turn to step into the role of designer. Using Lego bricks as their medium, they unleashed their imaginations to construct unique creations.

Students were prompted to envision the story behind their designs—describing the site, the purpose of their structure or object, its standout features, and the architectural style. Encouraged to think boldly and creatively, they brought their ideas to life, one brick at a time.

Back at the Prism studio, we amplified their vision by combining photos of their Lego creations with their design stories using an AI rendering tool. These vibrant, imaginative renderings were shared with the class, sparking excitement as the students saw their designs bridge the worlds of fantasy and reality.

These workshops were made possible from the support of the Chapel Hill - Carrboro Public School Foundation.
