NES Learning Volume with Architecture

Updated: Oct 3, 2024

October 1st, 2024

We joined our 5th grade friends at Northside Elementary School this week to talk about volume and how it relates to architecture.

We discussed the volume of rectangular prisms and how to find it using the formula (V=LxWxH) We critiqued simple rectangular buildings compared with buildings having a more complex composition. The complex buildings demonstrated how compound shapes can make architecture a more interesting space to occupy.

Then the young designers created their own architecture out of rectangular prisms. They used chipboard to create structures of various sizes and will calculate the volume of the entire compound shape.

Next Up - students will put on their urban designer hats and locate all of their creations on a map that will be Northside's 5th Grade City.
